Laura Perkins Cox, District 2 Council Member,  says she first heard the call to public service as a young girl.

“I remember sitting next to my Mom, stuffing envelopes for Tiger Teague in the early 1970s.  I worked on some state legislator’s campaigns too,” says Mrs. Perkins Cox.  “After being a wife and mother, serving our country and serving others as community volunteer has been the most rewarding thing I have done.”

Mrs. Perkins Cox served as a lieutenant in the U. S. Navy’s Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps.  “I met my husband Steve Cox when we were both stationed at Naval Station Long Beach California.  He is native Texan, too.  It’s funny that I had to join the Navy and move to Los Angeles to find a local Texas boy to marry, but that’s what happened.  We married in downtown Los Angeles in 1992.”

After completing their Navy service at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, she and Steve relocated to Garland in 1996 and started a family.  Although Mrs. Perkins Cox is an attorney licensed to practice in Texas, she decided to stay home to raise her two daughters, eight-year-old Miranda and three-year-old Sarah.

“I love staying home with our kids, but there’s only so much laundry you can do.  I feel strongly that we are all called to serve in some way.  That’s why I have also been an active community volunteer.”

That volunteer spirit keeps Mrs. Perkins Cox busy.  She is currently the leader of Brownie Girl Scout troop 2082, which is made up of sixteen 2nd graders at St. Joseph Catholic School, including daughter Miranda.

Before that, Mrs. Perkins Cox was Vice President and President of the Mill Creek Crossing Neighborhood Association.  She served as Vice Chair of the Garland Citizen Ethics Review Committee and wrote the Garland Ethics Ordinance.  She was appointed a member of the Board of Directors of the Garland Housing and Finance Corporation, serving as Vice President, then President. Mrs. Perkins Cox resigned from GHFC to run for City Council.

Mrs. Perkins Cox strongly supports the City’s new Strategy for Vital Neighborhoods.  In her years at GHFC, she worked tirelessly to improve Garland neighborhoods and revitalize Downtown Garland.  “We have a great vision of the future of downtown, with residents, shopping, and retail.  It won’t be easy or cheap, but it’s within our grasp,” she says.  “Garland should not look like Plano, Frisco, or anyplace else.  Our downtown should reflect our community, and our history.  Who we are, our diversity, and our community heritage is what makes us unique and vibrant.”
