Garland Youth Council

Chair Nelly Shora called the meeting to order at 5:22 p.m.
 
 
1.  Approval of Minutes from September 19, 2006 Meeting
 
 
2.  Bylaws Updates
 
Bylaws amended to clarify length of term and mentoring role for second-year members.
 
 
3.  Promoting GYC Participation
 
In addition to putting up posters at school and getting GYC meetings included in school announcements, each GYC member is urged to personally invite at least 5 people to each meeting and try to actually bring at least one person with them.  Additionally, GYC will sponsor a t-shirt design competition to help attract youth to the GYC activities.  GYC’s Planning Committee will formulate rules to be made available at the next full GYC meeting and at www.garlandyouthcouncil.org.
 
 
4.  Anti-Alcohol Update
 
Representatives of ALOUD will come to GYC’s November meeting to conduct Teach-In Training.  An updated schedule of schools will also be available.
 
 
5.  Skate Park Update
 
February 13, 2007 was selected as the date for the Skate Park Town Meeting.  The Skate Park Committee will work on program format and promotion of the meeting.
 
 
6.  Potential Future Projects
 
Discussion of potential participation in several projects.
 
-  National Youth Service Day – GYC would like to serve as volunteers for an existing project and consider whether to originate a project next year.
 
-  6th Annual Buzz Free Prom Dress Giveaway – GYC will offer volunteers to support the event.
 
-  PARD Sweetheart Dance- request being forwarded to GYC members to consider their individual availability.
 
-  MADD Strides for Change Walk – decided not to do this in 2007 because of other activities.
 
-  Teen Driver Safety – plan on presentation to be made at next full meeting
 
-  Others?
 
 
7.  Citizen Comments
 
Youth are encouraged to give their input on issues in the City that impact them and offer suggestions about how to address these issues.  Youth Council members cannot respond to issues that are not posted on the agenda according to the Texas Opens Meetings Act.
